FoGGO Network

In the year of 2010 the members of 12 CSOs working in 10 districts of south-west and central Odisha with their long experience in development work and commitment to address climate change came to realize the adverse impact of the climate change and ecological disorder on poor and vulnerable particularly Adivasi and other such communities. All were in agreement that unless the pro active actions are not taken this group of people will be severely affected and their livelihood and food security situation will become vulnerable. The gravity of the issues are such that it requires concentrate and cohesive effects at different level by many more organization and individuals. Under these context all these 12 CSO decided to form an independent, non-partisan and non-political network namely FoGGO (Forum for Green Governance Odisha) which will work towards protection, promotion, preservation of eco- system and bio-diversity.

Commitment On Climate Change

CLIMATE CHANGE, is primarily caused by the building up of greenhouse gases (GHG) e.g. carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and others in the atmosphere. The global increases in carbon dioxide concentration which have been responsible for the largest part of this build-up are due primarily to fossil fuel use and land-use and land-use change, owing to human activities talking place since pre-industrial times, while those of methane and nitrous oxide are primarily due to agriculture.

Climate Change can be accompanied by higher average temperature near earth’s surface, changed rainfall patterns, and increased severity and frequency floods, droughts and cyclones, which can severely impact livelihoods, especially of the poor in developing countries. The change in climate could lead to impacts on freshwater availability, oceanic acidification, food production, flooding of coastal areas and increased burden of vector borne and water borne diseases associated with extreme weather events, etc.

As an individual, to reduce the impact of climate change – if not totally, we have certain responsibilities to deliver. Let us switch over to green energy, build up efficient public transport system, consume less, waste less, avoid junk food, recycle, be a less aggressive consumer, support mitigation measures and lobby for conservation issues.

All the countries have to take the preventive steps to stop the changes occurring in the Climatic system. Bring down the activities of deforestation, fossil fuels, cut down the consumerism and use of the more environment- friendly agricultural methods. Cut down the use of the coal and sources of the clear energy. Biotechnology can be used to reduce the water requirement of the crops; increase crop yield, and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
